Mobile Devices for Learning Mobile technology is evolving so that voice is not the only information that can be shared through the device. Pics, video, texting, web sites, and now even applications are sitting in these devices. Created by: Rodolfo R. Rosales, MA The eLearning community has spoken, and the following is a list of the top trends in our field for the next year. “Serious Games” to gain knowledge Safety, experimentation, & active participation. Learning and collaborating can be fun, and fruitful. These networks are spaces where users can share ideas, media, information, and a culture of acceptance. When harnessed properly, there are tremendous learning opportunities. Created by: Rodolfo R. Rosales, MA Mashup A web application that combines data from more than one source into a single tool. Often, these mini-applications can be dropped into a site/Blog/social network, to increase the functionality of the space. Benefits of Mashups  Mainstreams relevant information to users  Similar to macros, users can find there own information and portals, without waiting for IS. Created by: Rodolfo R. Rosales, MA Wiki A collection of web pages that anyone can access, or change content there in. Typical uses for a wiki include: Collaborative Intelligence - like a document that many users can edit simultaneously (one version, one file, one place) Participatory Knowledgebase - similar to wikipedia, a place where information comes from the community itself Benefits of Wikis  Information shared comes from many sources, often times from “the ground up”  The software is simple for immediate use, and meets needs without lots of extra time. Created by: Rodolfo R. Rosales, MA Community Learning Networks An online tool that allows users to interact and share data with other users. Many offer open applications, interface customization, and the ability to share files and various media. Participatory Knowledgebase - similar to wikipedia, a place Social Networks Benefits ofwhere information comes from the community itself  Collaboration, data sharing, and team building can • occur across geographic regions  Access to data & people with knowledge, using a tried and proven technology  Information shared comes from many sources, often times from “the ground up” Created by: Rodolfo R. Rosales, MA Virtual Worlds Services that make it possible to meet and interact with others in a simulated realworld environment. Some examples of such worlds: • Second Life • There • Unisfair • Active Worlds Benefits of Virtual Worlds  Use of avatars allow users to interact with a space not as a viewer, but as practitioner and player.  Collaboration occurs in multiple ways, often simultaneously (one could watch a video, interact with bots, and chat with someone else. Created by: Rodolfo R. Rosales, MA Simulations for Learning A representation of real life that accurately demonstrates a physical or simulated process or phenomenon …a design, powered by learning objectives as a guiding principle, provides “deeper meaning” to static textual lessons. James Paul Gee (2003) Benefits of Simulations  Participants learn best when actively engaged in their own learning  Motivation is a key factor to adult learning, incorporating gaming elements in a simulation will assist in this  Learners that find their new skills immediately useful will find relevance and satisfaction in their performance  Experiential learning focuses on learning for the sake of accomplishing a goal or task  Through simulations, people reveal their critical reasoning abilities and behaviors Created by: Rodolfo R.
