New weekly discussion:
If you are in a company that is resistant to this type of learning, how have you breached the threshold? Or have you? Or have you wanted to but dare not bring it up? Or have you been shot down? If so, by whom?
Hmmm...this is all so new to folks, many of whom just got used to the whole idea that learners are the best ones to direct their own learning, that I have yet to broach the subject in my current situation. I find that many organizations are "command and control" in nature and are hesitant to loosen their grasp enough on processes to even think of things like wikis and blogs as learning tools.
I have not lost hope, though! I am excited about the opportunities that await just over the hill of resistance, and am plotting ways to move through the wall. I'd love ideas from any of my colleagues who have made the move.
Many in our company are very interested, but we have been encountering...roadblocks. IT resources are hard to come by, particularly when much of them are outsourced. Also a commitment to existing software and hardware is creating a bit of myopia.
We're implementing the LMS Learn.com at the end of the first quarter. I'm hopeful that showing off the capabilities will have an encouraging effect. The HR talk is all about Gen Y and "millenials", engagement, knowledge sharing, self-directed learning, etc. I'll be encouraging our employees to really explore the content available through Learn.com to build a case for exploring even more "exotic" learning tools.
Loren, I'm still hopeful you'll be able to implement your training wiki (which I affectionately call "Triki") - I know you've got a willing partner in I.T. so, between the two of you, I'm confident your influence will be effective. :-)
